I manage investments for a living.

So obviously, I think investing is extremely important. I love conversations about the market as much as anyone.

But here’s something I should probably drive home more:

Your investments aren’t the most important part of your financial plan.

What you’re actually trying to accomplish with your money is.

Yes—I get it… You want to have more money than you started with.

But the real goal is to figure out what you want that money to allow you to do.

And that’s where financial planning comes into the picture.

My job is great because all of my clients have different visions for their lives—and I get to help bring them to life.

Some want to retire at 50… some at 60… and some want to work for as long as they’re physically able to.

Some want a vacation home… or to help their kids buy a house… Some want to travel.

Ok—you get the point.

The investments help make those goals a reality.

And once you start looking at your money that way, the conversation changes.

It becomes less about “How did my portfolio do this year?”

(No—don’t let us off the hook. We aim to outperform!)

And more about:

“Am I on track to do the things I actually want to do?”

Because the bottom line is this:

Someone who earns an 8% return but can do EXACTLY what they want with their money and their life is winning far more than someone who earns 14% but can’t get off the hamster wheel.

So spend some time figuring out what you actually want your money to do for you.

Put some numbers around it. Build a plan. And then invest with those goals in mind.

Because getting the best return possible is great.

But getting where you actually want to go is better.

Have a great weekend!
